Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Nintendo Switch

Release Date

November 19th, 2021

Nintendo, The Pokémon Company

Way back in 2009, Nintendo and Game Freak released Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver for Nintendo DS, remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver, which Nintendo initially released on Game Boy. These games went down great with players and have remained fan-favorite titles to this day! One excellent feature from Heart Gold and Soul Silver–which fans have been asking to have in every subsequent Pokemon game release–is the ability to make your pokemon follow you around outside of their Pokeballs.

Game Freak first added this feature in Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy, in which Pikachu could follow you around, but it wasn’t until Heart Gold & Soul Silver that you could do this with any Pokémon.

The feature made a return in Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu & Let’s Go! Eevee, and then again in the Pokémon Sword & Shield DLC; Isle of Armor, though Game Freak restricted this to certain parts of the DLC.

Can Pokemon Follow You in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

Once again, fans have had that burning question in their minds, this time regarding Nintendo’s latest Pokémon remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Well, I am pleased to be able to tell you that, yes, you can let your pokémon out of their pokéballs to get some fresh air and stretch their legs as they join you on your adventure across the Sinnoh region.

However, this is not a feature you can switch on at the start of your adventure. You will first need to acquire this ability, and the way to do it is very peculiar indeed.

The game makes no effort to make you aware that this is something you can do at all, and many players who are focusing solely on reaching and defeating the Elite Four may never realize the feature exists!

Unlocking the ability to Walk Together with your Favorite Pokemon in Pokemon BDSP

Before you can let your pokémon roam free, you will need to progress through the game for at least a few hours until you reach Hearthome City, home of the Beauty Contest and Fantina’s Gym.

To get there, you will need to defeat Gardenia, the second gym leader, and rescue the Bike Shop owner from Team Galactic’s building in Eterna City.

As thanks for rescuing him, the Bike Shop owner will give you your very own Bicycle, allowing you to access Hearthome City via the Cycling Road.

Once you’re there, you will want to head to the north side of town and enter Amity Square via either entrance. One can be found behind the gym, while the other is northwest of the Pokémon Center.

In Amity Park, the attendant will let you know that you can choose a Pokémon to walk around the park with, but that you can only bring “cute” pokémon.

Their idea of “cute” Pokémon is pretty skewed as they wouldn’t let me take my Mew or Jirachi with me, but somehow Grotle was considered cute enough.

Explore the park as you like with your chosen Pokémon and then leave. On your way out, the attendant will stop you in surprise. She tells you that your Pokémon wants to stay outside of their pokéball and that this is quite rare.

What she says is nonsense, though, because from that point on, every Pokémon you catch will now be able to leave their ball and walk in your stride!

How to Walk Together with your Favorite Pokemon in Pokemon BDSP

Return to Hearthome, and you should see that the Pokémon who explored Amity park with you is now still out of their pokéball.

Pause the game with and open the Pokémon menu. There, you should see a star icon to the left of the Pokémon, which is now following you.

Select any other pokémon with (even those that the game does not consider “cute”) and then select the “Walk Together” option to let them out of their ball.

If you do not want any Pokémon to follow you, select the Pokémon currently accompanying you and select the “Return to Ball” option.

While a Pokémon is walking with you, you can talk to them by pressing to check in on how they’re doing, and they will sometimes even give you berries that they pick up off the ground.
